Dalí and Chagall in Bible Art exhibition at Gouwekerk Gouda

GOUDA – On Thursday 18 April, the Gouwekerk in Gouda will hold the opening of Bible Art: From Dalí to Chagall, a unique exhibition. This presentation brings together an exclusive selection of over 250 lithographs, engravings, drawings and artefacts from a range of artists, including Salvador Dalí and Marc Chagall. The initiative for the exhibition was taken by the owner of Gouwekerk and White House Development. “The exhibition has only left its home country a few times. This presentation in the Netherlands is actually a one-off occasion,” notes event coordinator Paul Koster. “The works were carefully selected from the extensive private collection of the physician Heinz Ess, an avid art collector from Daleiden, Germany.” In addition to works from Dalí and Chagall, the presentation also features works by the French artists Gustave Doré and Godefroy Engelmann and the German painter and graphic artist Otto Dix.

Biblical theme
The exhibited works all share a biblical theme. Dalí is represented by 40 drawings of biblical Jerusalem. The Chagall section offers 48 original lithographs from ‘The Bible’ series I and II. The presentation is enhanced by various interesting artefacts from the exhibiting artists.

Jan van Lokhorst
The Gouda-based artist Jan van Lokhorst will also be exhibiting a selection of works from his long- term Esther project. Over the past years, Van Lokhorst has made eight paintings and over one hundred drawings that reflect on this remarkable biblical tale. “I started making works inspired by this story six years ago. Its themes are still relevant today.”
