In the summer of 1438, a major city fire caused serious damage to the Town Hall. The city council decided that the new town hall should be free and chose the market field, then still a swampy peat bog, as the new location. On the right-hand side façade, you can see the chimes with the mechanical puppets, installed in 1961. The protagonist of the puppet show is Floris V, who granted Gouda city rights in 1272. Every two minutes, on the half-hour and full-hour, you are treated to a beautiful spectacle.
